Oklahoma City was born with the Oklahoma Land Run of April 1889. In one day homesteads were staked by pioneers in wagons and on horseback trying to start a new life on the wind swept prairie. Oklahoma City was chosen as a site due to the North Canadian River flowing through the land. Within two weeks, dirt streets were outlined and buildings were being erected on both sides of the streets in downtown OKC.
Oklahoma became a state on November 16, 1907 and Oklahoma City was made the Capitol. Recently, we finished the Capitol building by placing the dome on top which was originally cut due to budget shortfall.
Oklahoma City is a spread out on the prairie now encompassing many square miles. Small towns around the area such as Bethany, Edmond and Moore are now a part of the OKC Metro area. With the terrific highway system, any place in the Metro is only 15 to 30 minutes away.
It is a far cry from 1889 when it took horses half a day to get to the Capitol and pioneers made an all day trip into "town."
